Still Bout It Bout It

December 15, 2008

No One Set The Standard for Becoming A Self Made Millionaire More Than Percy Miller, And Ten Years Later, Master P, Is Still Bout It Bout It .

He may not have been considered one of the greatest lyricist of our time, but Percy “Master P” Miller took a formula that was before him by the likes of Russel Simmons, Eazy E and James Smith and created the phenomenon that was No Limit Records.  No rap label on any coast was as big as No Limit records in the late 90’s through the turn of the 21st century, and Master P was out selling everybody.  With artist such as C-Murder, Silkk, Mia X and Fiend and well established stars later down the line like Mystikal and Snoop Dogg.

The label, which was originally started in Richmond, CA, after P took a $10,000 inheritance and opened No Limit Record Store, but it was after a relocation to his home town of New Orleans, that the buzz grew.  Off of the strength of regional favorite, “I’m Bout It,” Master P was offered a deal for his label by Priority with P keeping all of the publishing and a 70/30 profit split on albums sold, unheard of in the music business, and Master P took full advantage.  Over the next few years, No Limit went on to release album after album: once a month, sometimes once a week, with nearly all of them reaching the platinum status.  Master P was indeed a self made millionaire.

Nowadays, No Limit records is no more after filing for bankruptcy a few years back, but not because of any failures on Master P part, lets face it, the climate in hip hop changes just as fast as the climate in the Dirty South.  But P is still out here, the clothing is still popping off, he produced a successful kid friendly sitcom for Nickelodeon, he still doing movies, and the music is still there too.  No Limit may be no more, but P has recently started a label with his son Romeo called Take A Stand Records, where the music is still hot, but the focus is now on no profanity.  And if that was enough, he plans on launching his own television network to compete with BET and Cable One.  I’m sure more success is to follow the hustler from Caliope projects and it just goes to show what he said was the truth, “You can’t stop a tank!”
